As well as working to provide comfortable homes for the friends and families of those being treated at all the major medical centers, the Fisher House foundation also works to help military families by sponsoring a number of scholarships for military children. This means the foundation helps to give these children opportunities to further their education without worrying about the cost. The scholarship provides for payment of tuition, books, lab fees, and other related expenses.
The foundation is dedicated to doing this as it feels it is important to repay military families for the committee members of the service provide for their country and the sacrifices their families make. This is the 13th year of their scholarships for military children program and over $11 million has been awarded so far. This gives an idea of the kind of change the scheme has made already and how many people’s lives have been improved. Over the years, the number of applicants has increased and the number of recipients has also steadily increased as people have become more aware of the program. Students have realized what I great opportunity it is and commissaries have recognized what a good cause it is and have increased their generosity.
This year 670 students will be awarded with one of these scholarships in July. The students who will receive the scholarships this year have been announced recently so all the children are aware of the help they will be receiving and can start planning the best way to spend it. Each grant is for $1,500 and the scholarship is awarded based on the student’s performance in school and their G.P.A achievement. At least one of these scholarships is given to a student at every commissary location where qualified applications are received. Applications can be submitted from December of the preceding year to February, so possible applicants have a lot of time to get organized and get all aspects of their application complete so they get the chance to receive the scholarship. Any child of an active duty, reserve/guard or retired military commissary customers can apply, and the scholarships are intended for those who are (or will be) enrolled in a full time, four year undergraduate course at a college or university.
The funding for these scholarships comes mainly from companies whose products are sold at military commissaries. They have kindly made donations towards the program, as they too believe it is important to invest in education and show their appreciation for military families. All of the money that is donated is put towards the scholarships and Fisher House does not charge for its services, in the same way that no one is charged for staying at any of their homes.
This scholarship program is a testament to the great work the Fisher House foundation carries out and illustrates their dedication to supporting military personnel in all facets of their lives. On top of the scholarship and the comfort homes across the world, it also sponsors the Hero Miles program and co-sponsors the Newman’s Own Award.
