Best known for a brilliant performance in award winning films like Gosford Park and Crash, Ryan Phillippe has well and truly earned his acting credentials and is a well known and respected actor who continues to star in hit films. He is also a very generous celebrity and has been involved in raising money for the Fisher House charity, which you can read more about here.
Born and raised in New Castle, Delaware, Phillippe was interested in a number of sports from a young age, including basketball and soccer. He began acting at a young age, landing a role in One Life to Live in 1992, a daytime drama. His role as a gay teenager was ground breaking as it was the first such character to appear on a daytime soap opera. Following this he worked on a number of small parts in television shows and films, before moving on to larger roles in more successful films.
His first major breakthrough came in 1997 when he was cast in the horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer, which increased his profile and celebrity significantly, leading to him being cast in other films like 54 and Cruel Intentions, alongside other up and coming stars.
It was around this time that Phillippe met Reese Witherspoon, who became his co-star in Cruel Intentions. The couple became engaged in December 1998 and were later married in June of 1999. The couple had a daughter and son together and remained married until 2007 when their divorce was finalized and they now share joint custody of their children. Phillippe has another daughter in 2011 with Alexis Knapp, who he dated briefly in 2010. It has been reported that he currently sees model Paullina Slagter.
As his success began to grow following a few well known and popular roles, Phillippe began to turn to more meaningful projects and began to work on films that received serious critical acclaim in the years 2000 and onwards. Some of this most notable choices include the Oscar nominated Gosford Park and the Oscar winning Crash. Works like The Way of the Gun and Flags of our Fathers are also worth mentioning when describing his journey to becoming a well-respected actor and a household name.
Following a slight lull in his workload around the time of his divorce, Phillippe began to pick up more roles in 2010 and starred in dramas, comedies and crime thrillers. He also returned to television in Damages, a show that was received very well across the board.
More recently, Phillippe has focused more on directing and producing films, a move that many people in Hollywood make later in their careers once they feel they have the experience and knowledge to be able to know which scripts are worth working on. Many of the projects he has leant his name to he also has a role in so fans can look forward to these films releases. He continues to work on improving his career and it is almost a certainty more awards are on the horizon for this fine actor.
