Donate
Donations are one of the best ways you can thank veterans. There are numerous programs and foundations where you can donate money for veterans as they adjust back into civilian life. There are charities where you can donate to veterans who are experiencing homelessness or to a VA medical center in Los Angeles, or elsewhere, to help pay for veteran’s medical services.
Fly a Flag
A simple way to show appreciation to veterans is to fly a flag at your home. This action shows that you are proud of your country and the freedoms it affords. However, be aware that there are certain rules and guidelines for flying a flag. By not adhering to these guidelines, you send the wrong message to neighbors.
Visit a VA Medical Center
In addition to donating money to a VA medical center, you can visit with veterans who are receiving care at a VA medical center in Los Angeles or other parts of the country. Ask these veterans questions about themselves and their service, bring them cards and letters, write down their stories. Keep in mind that some veterans may require care at medical centers for many weeks or months and family may be far away.
Educate Yourself about Your Country and Act
Many veterans say the best way to show your appreciation is to become educated about this country, its history, veterans and the service they are performing. There are many resources available online to help you learn more about the military and veterans. You can also speak with a veteran directly and ask about their experience to learn more about this country. Additionally, take the time to vote and utilize the freedoms that veterans are fighting for.
Just Say Thanks
A simple “thank you” can have profound effects on a veteran. It doesn’t take much effort but can ignite emotions and feelings that remind him or her of why they volunteered to serve. In addition to saying thanks, write thank you cards and letters to veterans. There are several letter-writing campaigns you can participate in to make this task simple and worthwhile.
There are numerous ways you can thank veterans for all they did — and continue to do — for this country and your freedoms. By taking the time to show and verbally express your gratitude to these men and women, and by recognizing their sacrifices, you are making a difference in their lives and your own.
